EYE FLOATERS AND MY WEEKENDS
Another Saturday has passed. Normally, my family and I would spend quiet Saturdays
together in the park or the nearby mall. Since my husband and I work almost
the whole week, we normally savor lazy weekends with the kids. Yesterday,
somehow it was different for me and my family. A lazy weekend turned into
one panicky weekend for me because of eye floaters. Let me tell you about
it…
About two weeks ago, my husband painted our daughter’s room sky blue. Wanting
to show my appreciation for his hard work, I went over to my daughter’s newly
painted room and looked around. As I was looking at the plain blue walls,
I noticed some shadowy strings floating around my eyesight. Thinking that
these floating things were actually dust (from all the vacuuming and cleaning),
I called out to my husband and told him to blow softly on my eye. After several
attempts, however, we finally gave up. Thinking that these drifting cobweb
images were nothing, I just commented on how the paint job was perfect for
my daughter’s addiction to the color blue.
A few days after, I noticed that the floating unknowns increased a bit. I
did not feel any pain or discomfort. It was just bothering to have to see
some specks following my field of vision. My concern growing, I called a family
friend whose husband is an eye doctor. Thinking that it has something to do
with my imperfect vision (I am nearsighted, by the way), I first believed
that it was either something that went into my eye or a complication of my
nearsightedness. Talking to my friend’s husband gave me the resolve to see
an eye specialist. Maybe hearing from an expert can give some light on the
matter, I thought.
And so this morning, instead of having a crazy house cleanup day or a relaxing
stroll in the park, my husband and I decided to see an ophthalmologist. Yes,
he confirmed that I was suffering from what we call “eye floaters”, a generally
harmless condition of the eyes most probably caused by my age and nearsightedness.
These eye floaters, according to him, are actually shadows caused by the clumping
and contraction of the gel-like substance in our eyes. He says that my condition
is quite harmless, but he also mentioned that it was good that I went straight
to him because in some cases, eye floaters might be serious.
After the talk with the doctor, my whole family was quite relieved. Well,
it is always best be in caution than to suffer in the end.
